Male and female of Lycosa hilaris [as illustrated in Koch, 1877a]. Cephalothorax length male
4.5 mm, female 2.5 mm.
N.B. Koch (1877a) described this
species from a male and two females found in New Zealand. Platnick (2001), following McKay (1973), also lists Tasmania as
part of its distribution. This, however, is most likely erroneous, as the
examination of Tasmanian collections did not reveal any specimens of L.
hilaris (C.J. Vink, pers. comm.). Lycosa hilaris is a senior
synonym to Schizocosa umbrata (L. Koch, 1877), Pardosa vicaria
(L. Koch, 1877), Pardosa virgatella (Roewer, 1951; = Lycosa virgata Goyen,
1887) and Lycosa algida Simon, 1905) (Vink
1996). However, Vink's (1996)
M.Sc. thesis does not constitute a publication according to IUZC guidelines.
Lycosa hilaris L. Koch, 1877a: 920-921, plate 79, Figs
6, 6A; 979-980, plate 85, Figs 6, 6A (female).
Lycosa hilaris L. Koch.- McKay,
1973: 379.
Both the holotype females of Schizocosa umbrata and Pardosa vicaria were described from the k. k. Hofkabinett Wien (Museum Vienna) (Koch 1877a).
New Zealand and offshore islands (Vink, 1996).
