Artoria berenice  (L. Koch, 1877)

Female of Artoria berenice [as illustrated in Koch  (1877a)]. Cephalothorax length 3 mm.

Male and female of Pardosa versicolor (= junior synonym of A. berenice)[as illustrated in Koch (1877a)]. However, the male constitutes a different species (see below)! Cephalothorax length male 2 mm, female 3 mm.

Female of Lycosa naeva (= junior synonym of A. berenice)[as illustrated in Koch (1878a)]. Cephalothorax length 3.0 mm.

N.B. Koch (1877a) described both sexes of Pardosa versicolor. Recent collections in dry sclerophyll forests of Victoria provided females clearly conspecific with Koch's (1877a) syntypes. However, the males from Victoria are very different to what Koch (1877a) illustrated and of which the original specimens are not located yet. His male is not P. versicolor. Koch's (1877a) himself mentioned differences between males and females (from German, p. 967: "The male is similarly coloured as the female, only the white patches of hair near the black patches in the posterior half of the abdomen are missing"). Males found with females of A. versicolor in Victoria display these white patches and have exactly the same abdomen pattern as females. The female retains the original species name, as its description was earlier (1 page!) than the male description.
